Igniting Change: Free Leadership & Innovation Event for KZN Leaders
Professor Jonathan Jansen

Citizen Leader Lab’s School Leadership Forum is hosting an afternoon of leadership, innovation and networking in Durban on Wednesday, 13 November 2024. This free event will bring together leaders from education, government, business and the community to explore how strong leadership can improve education and, in turn, drive social change in the province.

Citizen Leader Lab, a leading Public Benefit Organisation, is committed to developing leaders across South Africa’s public and private sectors. Through its programmes and workshops, Citizen Leader Lab empowers individuals to become effective leaders and change agents in their communities. One of its long-standing initiatives, the School Leadership Forum, offers regular interactive talks and panel discussions led by expert speakers on a wide range of education and leadership-related topics. The forum has been generously sponsored by the loyalty rewards programme MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet since its inception in 2012.

At the heart of this event is a bold idea: Leadership is not defined by titles or positions—it is a vehicle for social change that begins from within. Leadership is about resilience, self-awareness and the ability to uplift those around you. Whether leading a school, a business or a community, the principles remain the same: impactful leaders don’t just respond to challenges—they actively shape the future.

‘’We invite Citizen Leader Lab alumni, school principals, teachers, business leaders, Department of Education representatives and community stakeholders passionate about improving education and leadership in South Africa to join us. We will have the opportunity to explore innovative solutions to the challenges facing our education system, share success stories and build a network of committed leaders ready to make a difference,” says Kate Coleman, Business Development Specialist for Citizen Leader Lab.

Attendees can look forward to insights from Professor Jonathan Jansen, renowned thought leader and Professor of Education at Stellenbosch University. He will headline the event with his keynote address, “Leading from the Inside Out.” Drawing from his extensive experience, Professor Jansen will challenge participants to rethink the essence of leadership—not as a means of personal gain, but as a catalyst for social change.

Komala Pillay, CEO of Citizen Leader Lab, will highlight the organisation’s impact in developing leaders who are committed to driving social change. By focusing on the human side of leadership, Citizen Leader Lab empowers individuals to lead with empathy, integrity and purpose.

Additionally, a testimony from a school principal who has enhanced their leadership skills through Citizen Leader Lab will showcase how one individual’s growth as a leader can positively affect teachers, inspire learners and uplift an entire community.

“Now more than ever, South Africa needs leaders who are grounded, reflective and capable of turning vision into action,” said Coleman.

“At Citizen Leader Lab, we believe that true leadership starts from within—by understanding ourselves, we can inspire others to reach their full potential and create impact that transforms societies.”
