To all Matriculants,
How education can change your life (A personal Reflection)
You are at the beginning of a great adventure. While clichéd quotes might go around…this is a bit different.
I am (was) a person just like you. Watching Top Gear or even staring at a wall was more interesting than studying.
On the inside I knew I was destined for success but I really did not have the tools or the infrastructure. How did I achieve what I have?
Here’s how I was able to change careers and essentially my life.
I completed matric and studied Engineering (IT). I had so many school friends studying Eng or IT at the time; parents loved those careers in that era and us kids rarely had a choice.
I was employed as an IT specialist. I was then trained in locomotive mechanics (trains) and employed in the locomotive field. This is a career similar to fishing, some find it amazing, relaxing, rewarding and satisfying but for others let’s just say NO!
I enrolled to study music-the piano (a passion) allowing me to offer free piano lessons to young people which I sincerely enjoyed. It made me realize that some educational guidance and encouragement is all that some people need to be phenomenal.
I left circular employment to follow my own path…
I studied Theology and a bit of Psychology in an endeavour to help people… which led me to being a motivator and a mentor affording me the opportunity to speak to hundreds of people a week and at conferences. I stood in front of people that were wealthier and more intellectual which humbled me.
You are young but do not let anyone underestimate your potential and do not underestimate yourself.
I decided to study Law to which academic excellence opened a door and I was elected to be a law student mentor.
Legal advisory and advocacy are on the cards while I am currently the CEO of a company.
Ghandi, da Vinci, Einstein, Newton, Galilleo, Sappho, Hannah Arendt, Laura Bassi, John Locke are remembered and revered for their minds. What will you be remembered for? When people talk about you is it about your good looks which fades, or will you remembered for something that will inspire a generation?
It’s not about luck. You have the power to decide the outcome of your life.
You are in control. You are invincible.
Go out there and prove the haters wrong.
Believe in yourself and your capabilities.
Make it happen!
