Eleven-year-old mathematics mastermind, Suhrit Avaneesh Pitchaimuthu Sridhar, has been selected to represent South Africa in the India International Mathematics Competition (InIMC), taking place from the 26th to the 31st of July 2024. InIMC will host over 600 participants from over 30 countries from all five continents.
Suhrit lives in Hillcrest, is in Grade 6 at Thomas More College, and would like to study towards becoming an engineer when he completes school. His love for mathematics has flourished since placing 22nd in the Beyond Maths Challenge when he was just nine years old. Last year, Suhrit came first nationally in the first round of the International Mathematics Assessment for Schools (IMAS).
“This year Suhrit came first nationally in Grade 6, for the whole of the IMAS, and placed sixth nationally in IMAS, for Grade 6 and 7 combined,” explains proud dad, Sridhar Pitchaimuthu.
The cost to attend the InIMC competition is approximately R50 000 which will cover his return flight to India, meals for the week, costs for pre-event training in Bloemfontein, accommodation, transport costs between the various towns and cities to get to the competition site.
Only sixteen primary school students and sixteen higher secondary school students have been selected to represent South Africa at InIMC. Suhrit will travel with the Junior International Mathematics Competition Organising Body for SA Director, Kitty Phillips and Team Leader, Tarryn Locke.
“Suhrit is on a mission to help himself raise funds and has already raised R7 500 by selling raffle tickets for a Father’s Day hamper. He is determined and prepared to give his all to realise his dream of representing our country,” explains mom, Anandhi Dharmarajan.
