The preparation for the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) sometimes feels overwhelming and confusing. And all the online discussions and arguments regarding it create many conflicts. So let’s discuss the various test formats, scores, and different sections of ielts exam.

What is ielts? What is in it?

It is an english proficiency test for study, job, or immigration to an english speaking country. Countries like usa, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK accept ielts test. Ielts is not like other tests. It is a real-life test that assesses how you express yourself and communicate with others through the usage of english speaking in daily life.  Two variants of it are:

IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training

If you are studying, then IELTS Academic is what you should go for and if you are looking for a job or to migrate abroa,d then IELTS General Training is best for you.

In both versions, it consists of four sections namely reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Let us discuss each section in detail:

Reading

The paper is 60 minutes long and has 40 questions overall. The examiner wll give you 3 long texts or paragraphs from books, journals, or newspapers that you need to finish in a limited time. There is no need to read the texts from start to end as it will be too time-consuming. So to save time and finish the test paper on time, just skim the paper and look for the main ideas and theme.

Speaking

In the speaking test you will give an interview to the examiner. He will ask you to introduce yourself. And he will also ask general questions such as what are your hobbies? where are you from? what about your family? The examiner will also hand you a cue card. And you will have to speak on the given topic on the cue card. He will also conduct a discussion regarding the speech you have given based on the cue card.

Listening

During the listening test you will have to listen to dialogues between people and monologues in different accents to later answer the questions. Timing is 40 minutes for listening and answer writing. Each section will contain 10 questions making it 4 sections of 40 questions. Most importantly be aware of the common mistake of not checking the spelling and grammar while transferring answers. So, remember to recheck it once again.

Writing

The paper of the writing section is all about testing your writing skills. The duration ofthe section is restricted to 60 minutes. Divided into two sections, the writing section seems to be really challenging.

The question paper is set into two parts task 1 and task 2. You have to describe a graph, chart, or diagram in 150 words in task 1.

In task 2 you will be given an essay to write in 250 words. Even though both tasks are very important, task 2 is worth more marks so make sure to focus on task 2 more.

The exact way of the IELTS band calculation

The overall band score is the average of all four sections. The candidate will receive the band score in each section between 0-9 bands. A good score for ielts is above 7 bands. However, 6 bands are also acceptable for work permits in some countries, as the rules and regulations of each country differ from another.

Busting of the myths: A British accent is not compulsory to take the test, it is a myth. Accent does not matter, your pronunciation and grammar should be sound.

The usage of high and complicated vocabulary is not necessary, it is a myth. Language can be simple but the ability to express and communicate yourself should be good.
