At just 18 years old, Western Cape resident, Iminathi Dondolo, the reigning Miss Teenager South Africa 2023/2024, is not only an inspiration on the national stage but also a dedicated learner at Teneo Online School. Balancing the responsibilities of a prestigious title with her academic work is no easy feat, yet Iminathi does it with grace, thanks to the flexibility and support offered by Teneo’s online education model.

A journey of passion and purpose

Iminathi’s journey with Teneo began in 2023 when she sought a school that could accommodate her rapidly growing commitments. “I first started at Teneo because I wanted something that would help me be flexible in my day-to-day,” she explains.

With a schedule filled with photo shoots, interviews, and appearances, Iminathi knew that traditional schooling would be challenging. A teacher recommended Teneo, highlighting the school’s ability to cater to learners with unique needs. The decision was pivotal for Iminathi, allowing her to pursue both her academic and career aspirations without compromise.

As Miss Teenager South Africa, Iminathi’s calendar is now packed with engagements ranging from school visits for motivational talks to attending high-profile events like the Miss South Africa pageant. Yet, despite these obligations, she remains committed to her studies. “Being Miss Teenager demands a lot of attention, but Teneo helps me plan my day accordingly. If I need to be at an interview, I know I can catch up with recorded lessons later,” she shares.

The flexibility of online schooling

A testament to the advantages of online schooling, the key to Iminathi’s success lies in the flexibility that Teneo offers. Unlike traditional schools, where attendance is rigid and timebound, Teneo allows learners to structure their own schedules. School can be accessed from any location, including most assessments and exams, which facilitates travel and sudden personal schedule changes, while a variety of formats offer live online classes, pre-recorded lessons or a mix of both. Importantly, all lessons are recorded and available to be rewatched at any time. This flexibility is crucial for Iminathi. “I’ve missed classes for interviews and events, but I never fall behind because I can always go back and watch the recorded lessons,” she notes.

Online schooling, however, is not without its challenges. “You need to be very disciplined because you don’t have a teacher running after you,” Iminathi admits. Teneo’s supportive environment, however, with teachers readily available to assist, has made the transition easier. “The teachers at Teneo are very responsive and supportive. They’ve helped me keep up with my schoolwork while also pursuing my dreams.”

“When we heard that Iminathi had won Miss Teenager South Africa, we were over the moon! Seeing her balance such a prestigious role as reigning Queen, with her academic responsibilities is inspiring. We’re here to support her every step of the way as she continues to pursue her dreams, and help her achieve academic and extracurricular success,” says Ryan Inkley, Key Stage Leader at Teneo.

Academic excellence meets real-life experience

“Iminathi’s determination and discipline are truly remarkable, and we have no doubt that she will achieve great things in the future. Her success is a testament to what can be achieved when children are given the flexibility to thrive in both their studies and personal passions,” adds Debi Du Plessis, Phase Head of British International curriculum at Teneo.

Having started her International GCSEs with the British International curriculum, Iminathi was keen on continuing with a rigorous program, and Teneo’s Pearson Edexcel curriculum fit the bill perfectly. She has since progressed to AS levels, aiming to complete her finals in May next year. “It’s a very good curriculum because it prepares you for university-level work early on,” she explains.

Beyond academics, Teneo has provided Iminathi with life skills that will serve her well in the future. “Teneo has taught me to be independent and manage my time effectively, which is crucial for the career I want to pursue in law,” she says. Iminathi also appreciates the real-world experience that comes with online schooling, which she believes will ease her transition to university, where independence is key.

Balancing community and commitment

Despite her busy schedule, Iminathi remains committed to giving back to her community. “The Miss Teenager South Africa platform is a powerful tool to influence and inspire positive change,” she says.

Recently she dedicated 67 minutes of her time to community service as part of a Mandela Day initiative, and participated in a blanket and soup drive, distributing essentials to those in need.

Looking ahead, Iminathi hopes to run a nonprofit organisation to help homeless people with clothes and food.

Reflecting on her experience, Iminathi offers advice to other learners who might be struggling to balance their academic and extracurricular commitments. “If you don’t want to choose between your career and school, consider an online school like Teneo that supports both your academic and personal goals.”

Planning for success

As Iminathi continues her reign as Miss Teenager South Africa, she is determined to continue excelling both in and out of the classroom. Highlighting the growing role of online education in today’s world, her story is an inspiring example of how flexible online education can empower learners to reach their full potential, both academically and personally.
