1. Introduction

Annually celebrating youth has become a norm to highlight the individuals contributing to the development of young people. The main goal is to acknowledge the changemakers in various professions and industries who advocate for the youth. A crucial aspect for young people interested in marketing is building their brands, although their opportunities for participation are limited. This article explores strategies to attract and motivate young individuals interested in pursuing a career in marketing. Many young people are curious but require motivation and inspiration to enter the media and marketing industry and make a difference as millennials.

Young people need motivation in the professional world to be innovative and showcase their skills. It is essential to express ideas to identify, support, and nurture talent. The younger generation is exposed to various forms of media content that influences their personal and professional decision-making. Whether in a formal or informal environment, expressing interest can assist young people in choosing a career path that is in line with their personality.

Let’s consider how certain factors influence young people’s decision to pursue a career in marketing:

2. Provide Value

Crafting effective messages in your advertising brief is critical for connecting with the youth. Value-based messages are essential for driving consumer response to your Call To Action (CTA). The credibility of your product or service depends on the value it offers and how it will be utilized, especially when targeting the youth. Demonstrating value in your efforts helps to build strong, long-lasting relationships based on care and respect. Therefore, it’s important to highlight and communicate these aspects to the youth to influence their decision-making.

I recently spoke with several young people who are interested in pursuing a career in marketing, and some who already have experience in the industry. Many of them expressed a lack of interest in the field because today’s consumers are well-informed and value authentic connections with brands, rather than being bombarded with traditional advertising messages. Consumers now actively seek out brands that address their specific needs and are looking for long-term, meaningful interactions rather than one-time sales pitches. Marketers who focus only on one-off transactions risk losing out in the long run, as they fail to respect and bring value to the consumer. This approach may seem common in society, but it doesn’t resonate with the younger generation looking to enter the marketing industry.

To encourage young people to participate in marketing, it’s important to incorporate creative and fun activities that appeal to them. Providing access to tools and resources can help them unlock their full potential in mastering the art of marketing. In South Africa, many young people have obtained marketing qualifications that have not translated into tangible improvements in their lives. Therefore, businesses need to contribute, engage young people and provide them with opportunities to gain experience to make their qualifications valuable, especially in urban and rural areas where many young people are located.

3. Technical Skills

When you portray technology as a tool to be employed in accomplishing tasks for young individuals, this generates enthusiasm as their abilities are employed where necessary. Young people thrive with technology to demonstrate their creative talents in their work.

Technology and marketing go hand in hand, whether you are a small business or a well-established organization. Using software applications such as video conferencing, and project management tools to carry out work responsibilities is standard practice. This became apparent in the last 24 months during the pandemic, when companies had to adjust and improve the skills of their employees. It’s important to acknowledge that change is unavoidable. Additionally, organizations are also dealing with the overhaul of their policies, procedures, systems, overall operations and businesses need to incorporate young people in their strategic development.

Young people play a crucial role in organizational transformations, as their engagement and involvement are essential for brand development. Many workers struggle to adapt to new technology for their daily tasks and turn to their younger peers for guidance when formal training is lacking. The goal is for employees to leverage digital tools to contribute their skills and benefit the organization.

To end, embracing digital platforms allows for the exploration of different industry perspectives, especially when young people are engaged, leading to favorable outcomes. Why is this so? It’s because the younger generation introduces inventive technological tools that enhance efficiency and time management. These are a few of the tools utilized by worldwide marketers to excel in their fields. The introduction of modern technology in the university curriculum is important to drive innovation and accelerate entrepreneurship amongst the youth to utilize their technological skills.

4. Practical Approach

The thirst for knowledge is the fundamental basis for budding marketers. I have personally observed this, particularly when given the responsibility of instructing and guiding coworkers on a fresh program or approach to completing a task. Their enthusiasm is evident and tangible with a keen interest to have an impact.

I’ve consistently promoted the 100-question game. When you’re entering a new field, career, or starting a new job, engage in this game. It’s a great way to get to know people and the environment. Some prefer to spectate and participate in the 100-question game later on to gain clarity about their observations or work duties.

Showing interest in learning and growing by asking questions is important as it shows a desire to improve. Today, these qualities are characteristic of young people, which is crucial in marketing. Marketing professionals in training want to be involved in every step of the process, from start to finish to enhance skills. Different methods, various applications, and strategies are used to solve problems. Aspiring marketing professionals want to be involved in every step of the process. Witnessing the results of your hard work as a final product is rewarding, helping young people recognize the value of their work and the importance of their skills.

Finally, the hands-on approach yields more gratifying outcomes. Young people need to recognize the significance of their work and the value of their skills. This approach continuously tests skills like communication and teamwork for task completion. If you’re not a good team player, the hands-on approach will limit the knowledge you can gain, so it’s crucial for improving working relations with colleagues.

5. People Network

Building relationships, whether in a professional or personal capacity, is often undervalued. Developing a network is an important skill that should be honed regularly. It is an aspect of human connection that is not given enough credit, and young marketers must take advantage of this.

Without underestimating the importance, one should engage in meeting new individuals, initiating conversations with unfamiliar faces, and stepping out of your comfort zone. These are fundamental instincts that young marketers should embrace. The success of the industry is contingent on their role and positioning in the marketing space.

There are two networks to explore in communication to connect and raise awareness of young professionals in their community.  Interpersonal interactions play a key role in providing a platform for young people to connect, engage with their peers and colleagues to exchange information. This exchange of ideas and trends improves marketing compatibility. While the dissemination of information helps young people make informed decisions and plan their career paths.

Remember to form connections at events and gatherings to expand your formal and informal network as a young person. Building personal relationships is key in these interactions. As a young marketer, engage with industry groups to establish relationships that may lead to future partnerships and career prospects.

To finish, young people need to connect with industry peers on professional social media platforms such as LinkedIn. With technology at their fingertips, they should create online profiles to showcase their skills and make themselves visible to businesses and industry professionals. They should join professional groups and attend webinars to exchange information and ideas with like-minded professionals in marketing, discussing trends and best practices. Also, create both online and pdf portfolios to highlight their worth, and employability.

6. Job Satisfaction

Everyone desires to work in an environment where they are acknowledged and can pursue their career passion. Marketers need to create work environments where young people feel valued to unleash their creative abilities. As a professional, when delivering presentations to inspire and motivate young people, show them tangible results of real-world projects or advertisements you have worked on.

Results engage people.

When you demonstrate how projects evolve with before-and-after steps of completion, you spark interest and inspire people to get involved in the campaign. They may even want to join the organizational team to create more campaigns of a similar nature. This approach will encourage youth participation without the need for direct persuasion – actions speak louder than words. Show them instead of telling them about the creative process.

Visual messages have a stronger appeal than text or speech, and this is taken advantage of by marketers. When a work environment encourages creativity and freedom, it leads to higher productivity and better work performance. Young people are naturally more inclined towards visual elements and seek work environments that reflect their characteristics. Therefore, being visual, driven by goals, and aiming for high accomplishments expands the way you function in your work environment. When all these elements are combined, they contribute to creating a positive work atmosphere.

Finally, emphasize the importance of delivering results and setting targets that contribute to the overall success of the business or project. Bringing ideas to life provides satisfaction and validation, inspiring individuals to believe in themselves and their creative abilities. This can ignite interest among young people in the field of marketing, as they can relate to the idea of validation through seeing their work being publicized.

The influence of the business sector in South Africa is often exaggerated. There is a need to revise employment policies and structures to provide corporate experience for the thousands of graduates entering the job market each year. This will encourage them to become entrepreneurs and explore various sectors they are interested in.

Since internships and learnerships are limited, we should introduce a 6-month rotational work experience program for young people to gain exposure to the world of work. Businesses can also introduce 2 basic training programs such as onsite and online/remote internships to operate simultaneously, and allow a large number of young people to participate. This will help stabilize and grow the country’s economy as young people make significant contributions to its progress.

7. Conclusion

To conclude, the younger generation represents the future labor force and upcoming leaders. It is crucial to have them involved to question existing norms and introduce fresh ideas into our professional practices. Embracing this approach to appeal to young professionals in teaching, encouraging, and cultivating inventive work standards will enhance youth involvement.
