Tiger Brands donates 670 000 meals in celebration of Mandela Day

Tiger Brands has donated 670 000 meals in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund as part of the 10th anniversary celebrations of Mandela Day.
The celebrations didn’t just include Tiger Brands head office, employees at over 20 Tiger Brands factories across South Africa also supported the Mandela Day initiative by spending their time helping local community initiatives.

“Nelson Mandela dedicated most of his last living years to improve the lives of children around the country, and every year he spent his birthday in the company of little ones. With 2019 being the 10th anniversary of Mandela Day, Tiger Brands saw fit to collaborate with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund which strives to change the way society treats its’ children and youth,” said Mary-Jane Morifi, chief corporate affairs officer at Tiger Brands.

To mark this anniversary, Tiger Brands Mandela Day celebrations were held at their Bryanston offices where staff members contributed their 67 minutes to this worthy cause by packing 670 000 meals in the form of food parcels that were donated to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.

Sibongile Mkhabela, Chief Executive Officer, Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund received 670 buckets of food parcels in the shape of the number 67 from Tiger Brands CEO Lawrence Mac Dougall.

The Tiger Brands food items that made up the food parcels were chosen because of their staple nature, nutritious value and the convenience of the sizes. The parcels were also distributed according to family sizes, with bigger families receiving more than one hamper to ensure that the food lasts them for a minimum of a month. The balance of the parcels will be distributed to the Fund in bulk. The Fund will then distribute to its beneficiaries according to sizes and needs.

“One of the values upheld by The Nelson Mandela Trust Fund is the absolute belief that all children should enjoy the absence of hunger, abuse, exploitation, and homelessness, underpinned by a clear notion that the eradication of poverty and its systemic causes are the ultimate desired change. We as Tiger Brands as so pleased to have done our bit towards supporting Mandela Day,” said Morifi.

“Every day, Tiger Brands’ much loved and iconic products are found in almost every South African’s shopping basket. Being so close to the nation’s heart and building brands that people love, we are deliberate in ensuring that as many as possible benefit from our operations,” concludes Morifi.
