The Dis-Chem Foundation is participating in an Absa Group drive to support the Jagersfontein community, which is in dire need of assistance in the wake of a second tailings dam burst. Dis-Chem is donating R100 000 in toiletries and food. Absa has pledged to match donations made by Absa Rewards partners, bringing Absa and Dis-Chem’s combined contribution in this drive to R200 000. While both organisations responded separately to the initial dam burst that occurred on 11 September 2022, this contribution is as a result of Absa and Dis-Chem’s Rewards partnership.

The Dis-Chem Foundation hopes to make an impact on the lives of this community, which is in dire need, and The Humanitarian Empowerment Fund (HEF) will be assisting by taking care of logistics, distribution and giving much-needed aid to the community. While the greater community of the Free State have been assisting wherever they can, it was evident that more help was needed.

Toiletries are a basic essential and this donation will go towards assisting Jagersfontein residents regain dignity with day-to-day products. Jagersfontein local residents were truly overwhelmed by the impact that the burst dam and recent flash floods had on their community. Houses have been destroyed, families have been separated, children are being housed in boarding schools and hostels, and some have been moved to neighbouring towns.

It is unimaginable for families whose loved ones have gone missing, especially knowing that search efforts have been called off. Residents were left with just the clothing on their backs, homes and livestock were destroyed, and buildings are continuing to crumble.

Given the strong partnership between Absa and Dis-Chem, joining forces for an initiative such as this was easy. This effort is in line with Absa’s commitment of making a positive contribution, as a force for good, to our communities and was evidenced in Absa’s contribution to relief and rebuilding efforts following the devastating KZN floods earlier this year.

The Dis-Chem Foundation has long held the belief that, as a corporate entity, it has a role to play in making our society sustainable by improving the lives of individuals while relieving the burden on struggling communities.

Loyal customers contribute to efforts such as these by swiping their Dis-Chem and Dis-Chem Baby City Benefits cards.
