In the midst of a global pandemic, existing challenges are exacerbated and the plight of the vulnerable becomes that much more devastating. In the case of non-profit organisations (NPOs), life-saving fundraising activities have either been scaled down or cut completely through lockdown and financial restrictions. For Scottburgh-based animal care NPO, 4 Paws and a Tale Rescue, the cancellation of its annual Valentine’s fundraiser means that hundreds of animals are in now dire need of food donations, or they risk starvation.
“This past year has been incredibly difficult as there are more cases of neglected animals because people are facing unbearable financial burdens,” explained Nicky Koekemoer of 4 Paws and a Tale Rescue. “This is compounded by the fact that donations have been limited, and we’ve also taken on feeding of hungry families who have been badly affected by the pandemic.”
This volunteer-based NPO provides ongoing food and care for abused and neglected animals in shelters as well as strays. The team, which works in the KZN South Coast area, is currently feeding around 250 dogs a number of days of the week. They are also committed to preventing animal abuse while re-homing dogs and cats to loving homes around the province.
“With February being the month of love, we’re calling on the public to open their hearts by donating food that will literally save the lives of these truly vulnerable animals,” said Koekemoer. “We understand many are struggling right now, which is why even the smallest donation is incredibly welcome at this time.”

Make a donation:
- Dry food and tins of dog and cat food;
- Blankets, old towels, linen and kennels which make for a much more comfortable sleeping area and provide shelter on sunny and rainy days for stray and township dogs; or
- Flea and tick medication.
Donations can be dropped off at the Tale End Charity Shop in Thira Village just off the main road, 142 Scott Street, in Scottburgh; or Seadoone Vet in Amanzimtoti. Visitors can also support the cause by buying any range of thrift items from the shop as well, or donating previously loved items in good condition to the shop. Opening times are 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 12pm every Saturday.
