In a bid to tackle unemployment and poverty, Meals on Wheels Community Services, in partnership with SANParks, has launched a biodiversity economy skills training programme aimed at equipping underprivileged communities with income-generating skills.

The initiative, which focuses on sustainable manufacturing practices using organic materials, trains beneficiaries in producing beauty products, leather goods, and preserved foods. Senior Training and Development Manager Yanela Takawira highlighted the programme’s goal of fostering self-sufficiency among participants.

Bridging the Gap Between Skills and Employment

Takawira emphasized that while Meals on Wheels operates 182 kitchens feeding underprivileged individuals, the organisation recognised the need for long-term solutions beyond food aid.

“Just feeding alone is not sustainable,” she said. “We embarked on this partnership with SANParks to provide skills that help beneficiaries become self-reliant.”

The programme, sponsored by WB Tech South Africa, has already trained 105 individuals—70 last year and an additional 35 this year. Takawira stressed the importance of exit strategies, ensuring trainees can monetise their skills. SANParks will serve as a key market, with products sold at tourist destinations.

Addressing Unemployment and Gender Inequality

With youth unemployment at a staggering 62.9%, the initiative seeks to provide viable economic opportunities. Takawira noted that many beneficiaries are women affected by gender-based violence, often financially dependent on their abusers.

“We’re empowering women to be financially independent so they can escape abusive situations,” she said.

Call for Collaboration

Takawira urged corporations, NGOs, and government bodies to commit to long-term partnerships to sustain such programmes. She acknowledged challenges, including inconsistent funding, but remained optimistic about growing collaborations.

Those interested in supporting the initiative can visit Meals on Wheels’ website or contact their Johannesburg office.

As South Africa marks Youth Month, the programme stands as a beacon of hope, proving that skills development and strategic partnerships can pave the way for economic empowerment and social change.
