This winter, Makro is joining forces with 67 Blankets to bring warmth, hope and a sense of community to those who need it most through the “Layer Up Longest Scarf” initiative. The campaign invites customers to visit participating Makro stores on 11 July 2026 from 9am to 4pm and take part in knitting what aims to become Makro’s longest scarf. Every yellow scarf knitted will help provide warmth to charities and children’s homes, demonstrating how small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
Participating stores include:
- Makro Amanzimtoti
- Makro Montague Gardens
- Makro Carnival
The initiative encourages customers to visit participating stores to knit at the in-store knitting stations in the participating stores, contributing to the growing scarf and helping spread warmth to vulnerable communities this winter. Langa Khanyile, Retail Marketing Executive at Makro, said the campaign reflects the retailer’s commitment to bringing people together for a meaningful cause.
“At Makro, we believe that even the simplest act of kindness can have a lasting impact. Through our partnership with 67 Blankets, we’re inviting our customers to be part of something bigger than themselves. Every stitch represents warmth, compassion and hope for someone in need, while reminding us of the power of communities coming together to create positive change.”
Carolyn Steyn, Founder of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, said the collaboration is about inspiring South Africans to give generously with their time and talents. “67 Blankets was founded on the belief that every handmade stitch carries love and dignity. We are thrilled to partner with Makro to encourage thousands of South Africans to join us in creating the longest scarf while sharing warmth with charities and children’s homes. Together, we can transform simple balls of yellow wool into a powerful symbol of hope, unity in the Mandela Day spirit of service.”
Customers are encouraged to visit their nearest participating Makro store, pick up the knitting needles and help create a scarf that not only aims to set a remarkable milestone but, more importantly, brings warmth and comfort to those who need it most.
