The Keep Cape Town Warm Campaign, a 15-year-old initiative by Good Hope FM and NGO Community Chest, is gearing up to support vulnerable communities during one of the coldest winters forecasted for the region. This year, the campaign aims to collect over 6,000 non-perishable food items and 2,000 blankets to aid those in need.
Expanding Reach to More Vulnerable Communities
Dubbed a “beacon of hope” for the underprivileged, the campaign has historically assisted numerous NGOs and safe-care centers across the Western Cape. This year, the Community Chest has contributed R100,000 to expand efforts into previously unreached areas.
Last year, Capetonians donated 5,000 food items, 1,400 blankets, and 47 bags of secondhand clothing. However, with winter temperatures dropping and storms threatening to damage supplies, the need for backup resources is critical.
Strengthening Support for NGOs
The campaign ensures that beneficiary organizations meet strict due diligence standards before receiving aid. “We regulate vulnerable groups to ensure a formal approach to donations,” said a Community Chest representative. Recently, the organization distributed R1 million in grants to 22 NGOs, with more allocations planned throughout the year.
A Lifeline for Children and Families
Around 40 nonprofits will benefit from this year’s handover, including children’s homes and shelters. One beneficiary organization highlighted the impact of the donations:
“Warm blankets and food will not only provide physical comfort but also bring joy to children who have faced hardship. For many, this is the gift of love and security.”
Handovers Begin Amid Rising Need
With winter already bringing severe cold, the campaign’s handovers will take place over the coming weeks, ensuring timely assistance. As one organizer noted, “There are never enough resources—children come and go, but the need remains constant.”
The Keep Cape Town Warm Campaign continues to rally community support, proving that even in the coldest months, compassion can bring warmth to those who need it most.
