Dear Mr. President,

I am writing to you because of something called “Courage,” which is not exactly a  widespread epidemic in this country, yet courage is something that everybody wants; it  makes us worthy of respect. From the Bible to fairy tales; ancient myths to Hollywood  movies, our culture is rich with tales of bravery and self-sacrifice for a greater cause.

But, Mr. President, is courage just physical bravery? What about activists like Martin Luther King, or Mother Teresa, or entrepreneurs such as Walt Disney or Steve Jobs,  those with a vison and who took great financial risks to follow their dreams?

My name is Patricia L. Hope Kirby, and I am the Founder of the Hope for Children  Foundation, and it is “dreams” that I write to you about today.

Our 501c3 is a top-rated charity, created on April 2, 1998 to aid sexually and physically  abused children, adults and their protectors. Hope for Children Foundation, helps these  groups access effective legal, medical and mental health expertise and ensure that  involved officials mobilize all appropriate resources available to victims.

Did you know that violence is a learned behavior, Mr. President? It is predominantly facilitated by lack of awareness. Consequently, Hope for Children educates the general  public, families, federal and state law-enforcement officials, members of the judiciary,  prosecutors, educators, medical professionals, criminal justice professionals, family  shelters, rape crisis centers, other community organizations and agencies, clergy, school  and church administrators, the workplace and other leaders in the community about  sexual and physical abuse and its prevention….and we need your help! Child Abuse  has been declared a National Emergency, by Health and Human Services, but the President of the United States is the only one who can truly declare such an emergency.

We would like to plead with you. Mr. President, to acknowledge child abuse as a  National Emergency in America. We have heard that you are Pro-Life. Would this not  be a loud and clear message for you to prove this to our nation? By doing this you join  with investigative priorities of our nations FBI as seen below:

• Child abductions: Non-ransom child abductions; domestic parental kidnapping • Child sexual exploitation enterprises: Domestic child prostitution; online networks  and enterprises

• Contact offenses against children: Domestic travel with intent to engage in illegal  sexual activity with children; child sex tourism (international travel to engage in sexual  activity with children); production of child pornography; coercion/enticement of a  minor

• Trafficking of child pornography: Mass distribution of child pornography; possession  of child pornography

• International parental kidnapping

• Other crimes against children: All other crimes against children violations within the  FBI’s jurisdiction are investigated in accordance with available resources

We believe that courage is standing up for what is right. It is facing insurmountable  odds; it is walking the road less traveled; it is caring! A man named Lord Chesterfield said, “Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” We invite you to help us; to be a part of the brave ones who care enough to help the  helpless….the children who suffer at the hands of cowards, the uninformed and those  who have no respect for their fellow human beings.

Thank you, Mr. President. I invite you, no, I challenge you to, “Courage”, to reach out  to me and to join other courageous souls who fight this insidious battle.

Most sincerely,

Patricia L. Hope Kirby, Founder, The Hope for Children
