Family launches appeal to support young woman after M4 head-on crash

A fundraising appeal has been launched to help a young woman critically injured in a head-on collision on Durban’s M4 Ruth First highway earlier this year.

Amber Rose was one of three people seriously hurt in the crash, which occurred on the morning of Tuesday, 27 May just before the Virginia off-ramp. Emergency responders from ALS Paramedics found two badly damaged vehicles blocking both directions of the highway, with all three occupants in critical condition.

Due to the severity of her injuries, Amber was stabilised at the scene and airlifted to hospital by the Air Mercy Aeromedical Helicopter. She has since undergone multiple major surgeries, including emergency bowel repair, but continues to face serious complications — including a diagnosis of Wilkie’s syndrome and a small bowel obstruction.

“She is unable to keep much down and is suffering severe nausea and vomiting,” said Catherine Hogan, Amber’s godmother from Bicester in England, who launched the fundraiser to support her recovery. “It’s been an absolute rollercoaster of pain, tears, recovery — then sliding backwards, then zooming forward.”

The appeal aims to help cover Amber’s ongoing medical needs and living costs while she is unable to work. More than £1,650 (approximately R38,000) has already been donated towards a £2,000 target.
