The South African entertainment industry is mourning the sudden loss of acclaimed actor Presley Chweneyagae, who passed away at the age of 40. Tributes have poured in from colleagues, fans, and mentors, with State Theatre District Director Aubrey Sekhabi describing his death as a “great loss” for the country.

Chweneyagae, best known for his breakthrough role as Tsotsi in the 2005 Oscar-winning film Tsotsi, had a career spanning over three decades. Starting as a child actor in drama classes at the Northwest Arts Council, he quickly rose to prominence, captivating audiences with his raw talent and magnetic presence.

A Mentor’s Reflections: “A Big Heart and Unmatched Talent”

Speaking in an emotional interview, Sekhabi, who had known Chweneyagae since he was 10 years old, shared heartfelt memories of the actor’s journey.

“He was a boy with a big heart who loved the arts,” Sekhabi said. “From his first play, Jacking the Box, we knew he was destined for greatness.”

The two collaborated on numerous projects, including the stage production Silent Voice, which they performed at the Edinburgh Festival. Sekhabi recalled their last performance together in November 2023, where Chweneyagae delivered a powerful snippet of Silent Voice for the launch of SAS TV.

A Sudden and Shocking Loss

Sekhabi revealed that he had spent time with Chweneyagae just days before his passing, recalling a joyful evening at the State Theatre where the actor, without a ticket, charmed his way into a sold-out show.

“He said, ‘I’m home now, I’m feeling so happy,’” Sekhabi remembered. “When he left, he told us, ‘I love you guys so much.’ Those words are still echoing in my head.”

The cause of death has not yet been disclosed, as the family holds private meetings before making an official statement.

A Legacy of Excellence and Humility

Chweneyagae’s career was marked by versatility—from his iconic role in Tsotsi to his portrayal of Tshidi Cobra in The River and the upcoming spin-off Kabelo. He earned multiple accolades, including two Best Actor awards at the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) in 2019 and 2024.

Despite his fame, Sekhabi emphasized that Chweneyagae never forgot his roots. “He always gave credit to where he came from. The State Theatre was home to him.”

A Lesson in Passion and Perseverance

Sekhabi believes Chweneyagae’s legacy extends beyond acting. “He proved that no matter where you come from—even a village in Mahikeng—you can achieve greatness if you’re passionate.”

As tributes continue to pour in, South Africa remembers an artist who not only shone on screen and stage but also touched lives with his kindness, humility, and boundless love for his craft.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
