The Eastern Cape Provincial Government has officially opened the 51st edition of the National Arts Festival, a premier cultural event set to run from 26 June to 6 July 2025. The festival promises an electrifying lineup of theatre, dance, music, comedy, visual arts, and film, featuring over 2,400 performances by local and international artists.
A Celebration of Creativity and Economic Growth
The provincial Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture (DSRAC) has invested R40 million to support the festival, underscoring its commitment to nurturing artistic talent and boosting tourism.
“This festival is not just about the arts—it’s about economic spin-offs, hospitality, and tourism,” said Sibulele Ngongo, MEC for the DSRAC. “We’ve ring-fenced R2 million specifically to showcase Eastern Cape talent, reinforcing our province as the home of legends.”
Grassroots Talent Development
A key focus this year has been scouting raw talent from rural areas. The department conducted extensive auditions, uncovering poets, storytellers, and performers who will now share the stage with established artists.
“We went to the deepest corners of the Eastern Cape to find undiscovered talent,” Ngongo explained. “The response was overwhelming—long lines of people eager to showcase their craft.”
