Nedbank has expanded its already extensive range of contactless payment options with the addition of Google Pay, thereby providing users of android phones, notepads, and smart watches yet another easy, convenient and secure way to make payments with a simple tap of their Google Pay enabled devices.

Google Pay allows our customers to pay and make secure contactless purchases in stores in apps, and on the web.  According to Chipo Mushwana, Executive: Emerging Innovation at Nedbank, this offering further supports Nedbank’s ‘Digital first, first in digital’ ambition, and is another milestone on the bank’s execution of its payment innovation journey. Mushwana adds that over the last 18months the South African market has shown a deep appreciation for contactless payments evidenced by the growth in volumes and value of purchases made using these methods.

“Nedbank’s innovation journey focuses on harnessing the full power of digital to deliver meaningful payment solutions that go beyond ordinary banking services but empower clients of all types to transact easily on a day-to-day basis,” Mushwana says, “and the addition of Google Pay to our contactless payment solutions gives Nedbank clients even more choice and convenience when it comes to making payments.”

Mushwana explains that taking advantage of the ease and security of Google Pay requires that clients store their Nedbank credit or debit card within Google Wallet, a digital wallet that is also launching in South Africa today. “Once you’ve done that, paying for goods and services is as simple as tapping your device – whether it be a phone, notepad or smart watch – on a point-of-sale terminal.”

The launch of Google Pay in South Africa follows similar successful launches in numerous other countries around the world, including the UK, the USA, Russia, Mexico, and others,” Mushwana says, “which is why Nedbank is excited about being one of the few financial services providers selected to launch the Google Pay offering here in South Africa.”

For Nedbank clients who are android device users, simply follow these steps to add your Nedbank Card to Google Wallet:

  1. Ensure you are running the latest android operating system (Lollipop 5.0 or higher).
  2. Download Google Wallet from the Play Store.
  3. Open the Google Wallet
  4. Tap ‘Add to Wallet’ and follow the instructions
  5. Verify your card if needed. Then you’re all set.

At Nedbank, we continue to focus on delivering quick and convenient cashless payment options, from our own tap-and-go and scan-to-pay on-phone payments, to integration with various third-party apps,” Mushwana explains, “and now we’re very pleased to be able to expand this selection of payment solutions with the addition of Google Pay.”
