Mauritius has witnessed a growing popularity as an investment, relocation or retirement destination for South Africans over the years. Beyond the appeal of an exotic island lifestyle, it is known for its investor-friendly tax regime, observance of the rule of law, peace and security and various incentives to attract businesses, tourists, retirees, and investors.

One of the strongest economies in Africa, Mauritius boasted a real GDP growth rate of 8.7% and a gross national income (GNI) per capita of around US$ 11,400 last year.

The Economic Development Board (EDB) of Mauritius says this success has not escaped the notice of South Africans, who now account for more than a fifth (21%) of the property investment market in Mauritius. In addition, South Africa has become the Number 1 export destination for Mauritius. The country is also amongst the global top five preferred retirement destinations for South Africans.

The strength of the Mauritian economy as an investment hub has further fuelled growth in the rest of Africa – supporting some 4.2-million jobs across the rest of the continent and bringing in some USD 80-billion in foreign investment through Mauritius to African economies.

Looking to strengthen the relationship with South Africans, the Economic Development Board of Mauritius will lead a delegation comprising private stakeholders in a multi-sectoral roadshow in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Gqeberha and Durban from 8 to 16 May 2023.

The members of the delegation will meet with business leaders, individuals, entrepreneurs and top-tier investors looking to capitalise on the benefits of leveraging on Mauritius as the next-door neighbour, such as a wealth growth rate that is expected to increase by 75% over the next decade.

The series will feature business forums unpacking investment opportunities in real estate, financial services and manufacturing, as well as exploring Mauritius as a retirement destination. The EDB is also hosting Buyers and Sellers meetings in Johannesburg and Cape Town that shall provide the right platform to connect South African and Mauritian businesses.

For more information about the roadshow please visit the EDB website: www.mauritius2023.com or register for each city go to South Africa Mission (edbmauritius.org). Registrations for all events close on 7 May 2023.
