Chinese firms were the biggest contributor to 5G phone shipments in the past quarter, with 72% of the global shipments coming from brands like Huawei, Vivo, and Oppo, according to a new report by Counterpoint Research. 5G phones contributed to 10% of the total global handset shipments in the quarter.
“5G shipment continued its growth in China in spite of the decline in the overall smartphone market across regions, majorly driven by evolving consumer demographics, affordable 5G devices, and the proliferation of smartphone users,” Counterpoint stated.
Despite an overall 15% year-on-year (YoY) decline in revenues for the smartphone industry during the quarter, the average selling price (ASP) of smartphones increased by 10% in the quarter, with China reporting the highest ASP increase at 12%. On average, a new smartphone will cost about USD 310 in China, according to Counterpoint.
