Travel Smart and Sustainably this Tourism Month
Sharon James

As September marks Tourism Month and Heritage Month, and with National Recycling Day on the 18th, there’s no better time to explore the beauty of our country while making sustainable choices. Sharon James, the owner of Case Closed, encourages South Africans to travel locally and responsibly, supporting the recovery of the tourism sector while preserving our environment.

“I love travelling and want to keep my things safe while on my adventures but hated that the only option was to wrap my cases up in plastic. So, I combined my passion for travelling with my love of protecting our environment and started Case Closed reusable case covers in 2020. We manufacture a range of reusable suitcase covers as a stylish alternative to plastic-wrapped luggage,” says Sharon.

Embracing Local Travel
Tourism Month is an opportunity to highlight the economic and cultural value of travel within South Africa. This year, the theme is “Tourism and Peace – 30 years of connecting people, places and culture,” encouraging South Africans to showcase our many communities’ unique traditions, languages, and heritage. “Traveling within our own country not only helps to sustain local businesses and protect jobs, but it also allows us to appreciate the rich heritage and diverse landscapes that South Africa offers,” says Sharon James.

Travel Light on the Planet
Gone are the days of clinging plastic wrap struggling to contain your luggage. As a company born from a love of exploration and a deep respect for the environment, Case Closed Covers offers a sustainable solution for the eco-conscious traveller. “We understand the importance of preserving our incredible planet. That’s why we’ve created a line of reusable suitcase covers made with zero-waste production practices,” Sharon adds. “We source our materials locally and work with South African suppliers, keeping our environmental footprint minimal.”

Celebrate South Africa’s Rich Diversity
September is also Heritage Month, a time to honour the traditions, history, and culture that define our nation. “Our suitcase covers are proudly South African, and we are committed to supporting local industries. From the vibrant patterns inspired by our heritage to the local suppliers we work with, Case Closed reflects the essence of our diverse country,” Sharon adds.

Sustainable Travel Choices
With National Recycling Day on the 18th of September, there’s an added emphasis on making environmentally-friendly decisions. Sharon explains, “I love that we help travellers protect the environment and their belongings whilst standing out from the crowd by easily identifying their luggage so that they can hit the road faster to explore their destination. Our stylish and durable covers not only shield your luggage from scratches and scuffs but also add a touch of personality. From vibrant patterns to classic designs, you can express your unique style while protecting your belongings. But more importantly, you’re making a conscious choice to travel lighter on the planet. Unlike disposable plastic wrap, Case Closed covers are built to last, reducing waste and minimizing your impact on the environment.”

Supporting Local Tourism and the Environment
As the tourism sector continues its recovery from the impact of COVID-19, there’s a growing recognition of the importance of domestic travel. According to recent statistics, domestic flights have seen a significant increase, with many routes returning to pre-pandemic levels. “This Tourism Month, let’s make a conscious effort to explore South Africa, whether it’s the majestic Drakensberg, the serene Garden Route, or the vibrant cities rich in history. Every journey contributes to the economy and helps preserve our natural and cultural heritage,” concludes Sharon.
