Some 574 staff members from Shoprite, Checkers and Usave stores in the Eastern Cape and parts of the Southern Cape removed close to 1 000 bags of waste from 104 communities this week.
These are the first of quarterly cleanup events planned for this year, where employees from the Shoprite Group across various locations in the Eastern and Southern Cape give back to their community by keeping their immediate environment clean.
The Group was the first among the retailers to organise regular community cleanups, and hosted Africa’s Biggest Cleanup in 2018 when more than 12 000 volunteers at over 400 events across 12 countries collected 26 000 bags of waste.
“We’re still pursuing our goal of launching a movement of active citizens who act for change by cleaning and keeping clean public areas. Cleanups are happening in the Eastern and Southern Cape as well as other parts of the country at regular intervals,” says Lunga Schoeman, the Shoprite Group’s CSI Manager.
“The cleanups are also an opportunity for our employees to connect with the communities they serve outside of the trading environment,” comments Schoeman.
Members of the public who would like to join future cleanup events are urged to visit their nearest Shoprite, Checkers or Usave supermarket to find out when they are hosting the next event.
