With a fresh New Year ahead, new goals being set and New Year’s resolutions in full swing, why not take the environment and the future of our planet into consideration, by adopting and implementing ‘green’ behaviours this New Year.

Our glass recycling rate in South Africa has gradually increased over the years and is now at an impressive 42%. However, we still have a lot of room for growth. The Glass Recycling Company (TGRC) is calling on all South Africans to adopt and commit to recycling behaviours that will further increase local glass recycling rates.

If you are a parent with little ones, consider making your trip to the glass bank (where you recycle all your glass bottles and jars) a fun learning experience, to teach the little ones about looking after the environment. Instilling green behaviours in the youth ensures that they carry these habits with them into adulthood.

A simple New year’s resolution to carry with you throughout the year is ‘responsible shopping’. Make sure you continue to make environmentally friendly purchasing decisions by shopping for products in recyclable packaging or packaged in glass – glass is one of the few packaging that can indefinitely be recycled and with your help, won’t end up in a landfill.

Make 2020 a year to be proud of and start your glass recycling journey! Find your nearest glass bank online at www.tgrc.co.za.

Here are six reasons why you should you recycle your glass:

Recycling glass saves scarce landfill space

By recycling, you are preventing waste glass from filling up South Africa’s waste sites, tips and landfills.

Keeping South Africa clean

By recycling instead of littering, you are ensuring our natural environment is kept clean and beautiful.

Glass recycling saves energy

For example, recycling just one bottle saves enough energy to power a fluorescent light bulb for seven hours!

Recycling reduces our carbon footprint

Taking into account the transportation and processing, for every ton of glass made out of recycled glass, 670kg of CO2 emissions are saved.

Recycling conserves our natural resources

For every ton of waste glass used to manufacture new glass, 1.2 tons of natural resources are saved.

Collecting glass for glass recycling can serve as a source of income

Unemployed people are able to earn a source of income by collecting and selling the glass to buy-back centres.
