Top speaker line-up to unpack finance trends at Future of Banking webinar

The rapid digitisation of the financial sector has forced banks to reconsider preferred practices and customer interaction. To help navigate this fast-changing landscape, industry leaders from the financial world will discuss these ‘Megatrends Reshaping Banking in Africa’ at the 2021 Future of Banking Virtual Conference – hosted by CNBC AFRICA, in partnership with FORBES AFRICA, and sponsored by Euro Exim Bank and Liquid Intelligent Technologies. This year’s keynote address, What will a future bank look like 20 years from today? will be given by the Managing Director for The Banking Association South Africa, Bongiwe Kunene. She has extensive experience in the finance sector, having previously held the position of Pan-Africa Head of Public Sector Banking for the Standard Bank Group, and the Executive Director at the World Bank Group in Washington DC, representing South Africa, Nigeria and Angola. Kunene chaired the Audit Committee of the World Bank Group and has also served in the South African government in various capacities.

The panel discussion entitled The Changing Face of Banking: Cash, Mobile Money, Digital Payment Adoption welcomes Dr Graham Bright, Head of Compliance and Operations at Euro Exim Bank Ltd. Dr Bright has held a number of roles in the finance industry for more than 40 years, working with industry utilities, regulators and central banks. He’s worked at SWIFT, EMC and Financial Tradeware and is currently a serving UK Justice of the Peace sitting on the Crown Court appeals. Dr Bright is a regular contributor to trade journals and a speaker at trade industry conferences across the globe.

He’s joined by Andy Jury, Group CEO of Mukuru. This is one of the largest money transfer providers in Africa, and is also a leading next gen financial services platform. Under Jury’s guidance, Mukuru has grown its customer base to more than 9 million in 70 countries. He’s expanding the offering of financial services products by providing financial inclusion to those without access to formal bank accounts.

Also on the panel is Vimal Kumar Ambat, CEO of Airtel Money, Airtel Africa Operations. Ambat is a strategic planner with expertise in setting up and managing business operations, and implementing strategies to enhance market penetration, sales volumes and growth. He has more than 26 years’ experience in running retain and business banking, credit cards, consumer loans, retail liabilities and wealth management, having worked with leading banks like Standard Chartered, ANZ Bank, ABN AMRO in Asia, Middle East and Africa.

The panel discussion on Banking’s Response to the Fintech Challenge in Africa gains insight from Samuel Sule, Director and Head of Financing of Renaissance Capital with more than a decade of capital markets’ experience in Africa and Europe. Sule has acted as lead banker on landmark local currency instruments and Eurobond issues for the Nigeria sovereign, financial institutions and corporates. He also works with various issuers as ratings, structuring and financial adviser on debt issuances across multiple currencies and formats including sustainable issues.

He’ll be discussing Fintech challenges with Anton van der Merwe, the COO at Ukheshe Technologies with more than 25 years’ worth of experience in digital payments. Prior to joining Ukheshe, Van der Merwe headed the Absa Credit Card Product and Marketing portfolio, was the CEO of SASWITCH at BankservAfrica and also spent a number of years with Mastercard looking at diverse portfolios. He has a passion for customers and partnerships to co-create market solutions that help shape the ecosystem.

The third speaker will be Mayowa Kuyoro, a partner at McKinsey’s Lagos office and a leader of McKinsey Africa’s Financial Institutions practice. Since joining in 2010, she has worked with several multinational institutions, garnering extensive experience across Africa. Kuyoro, who has a Masters in Business Administration with Distinction from Harvard Business School, also co-leads McKinsey’s women’s initiative in West Africa.

The event will also conclude with a mini-panel discussion on Cyber Risk and Financial Crime (CyFi). Talking on this important subject is Marcin Nadolny, the Head of EMEA Banking & Insurance Fraud at the SAS Institute. Nadolny and his team are subject matter experts, helping banks, insurers and other financial institutions combat fraud and financial crimes in the digital world. They assist in improving detection across all areas including payments fraud, application and identity fraud, insurance claims fraud and insider threats.

Also providing ground-breaking insights on cyber risk is Ryan Mer, the CEO and co-founder of eftsure Africa. This is a Know Your Payee™ (KYP) platform provider that protects businesses against payment fraud by automating controls and processes around payee management. Mer has a keen interest in the role technology has on creating efficiencies and reducing business risk. Before eftsure Africa, Mer and his business partner introduced the electronic audit confirmation platform, Confirmation.com, to the South African market.
