Cape Town, South Africa – On Tuesday, 26 August 2025, TEDxCapeTown and TEDxYouth@CapeTown, in partnership with Workshop17, present the next instalment of the #TEDTuesdays Watch Party Series: “Screens & Scenes – Reviving Township Cinema.”
The evening will feature a screening of filmmaker Ziganekozihle Makhetha’s powerful TEDx talk, “Bringing Township Cinema Back Through Sustainability,” followed by a live panel discussion and audience Q&A. Together, we’ll explore how cinema can preserve heritage, create jobs, and reconnect communities through the power of storytelling.
- Panelists include,
- Mbali Mashaba – Award-winning creative researcher, filmmaker, and one of the Mail & Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans of 2025
- Rowan Pybus – Co-Founder of Sunshine Cinema, Africa’s first solar-powered cinema run by youth change-makers.
Why it matters: This watch party is more than a film screening, it’s a platform for celebrating storytelling as cultural revival and empowerment. It brings together TEDx ideas, cinematic heritage, and community activism under one roof.
After the screening of Makhetha’s TED talk, the audience will have an opportunity to engage directly with the speaker in person, the panelists and fellow attendees in an interactive conversation.
