A culinary quest is now within reach

Local KZN radio station ECR is renowned for its “Big Favour”, a weekly collaboration between the station, its listeners, and someone in need of a favour. DJ, Carol Ofori, recently heard of a young lady by the name of Shaylene Fortein who lives in Mayville with her grandmother, and who sadly would not be able to attend her Matric dance due to her unfortunate home circumstances which simply do not allow for the costs involved.

Saddened at the prospect of Shaylene missing out on the celebration which every learner looks forward to at the end of their school career, fairy godmother, Carol, swooped in and waved her magic wand. And together with the help of generous sponsors, has been able to make Shaylene’s Matric dance dreams a reality. After chatting with Shaylene about the dance and what they were planning for her magical evening, Carol also learnt of her dream to become a chef, which she could not pursue due to a lack of finances. Carol realised that as important as it was to ensure that Shaylene attended her dance, it was even more essential for her to be able to follow her culinary dreams.

Fortunately, there was an angel listening who leapt at the opportunity to help. Managing Director of the International Hotel School, Laurica Kok, came forward and offered Shaylene a full bursary for their 1-year National Certificate in Professional Cooking Traineeship Programme. The programme is valued at R55 000, and included in the Bursary is a Study Pack with all the necessary uniforms, textbooks, knife kit and required apparel.

Laurica explains why they felt so moved to jump on board, “Nelson Mandela said that ‘education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world’ and while we know we can’t help everyone, we can help someone. And today, that someone was Shaylene!”  There was huge excitement in the studio when Laurica arrived to share the happy news of the fully sponsored bursary! Shaylene was understandably overwhelmed with gratitude and promised to work hard to achieve her qualification at the conclusion of the Traineeship programme and make the International Hotel School proud.

The programme provides students with relevant theory, skills, and unrivalled practical work experience, ideal for those wishing to follow a career path as a chef. During the “Earn while you Learn” Traineeship programme, trainees are placed in leading hospitality establishments where they are employed full-time. Students gain practical experience in a working environment, earn a monthly stipend, and complete their studies through the International Hotel School online learning platform, supported by tutorials and facilitators who conduct visits to the workplace.  There are a number of positions within hotels and restaurants ready for trainees and it is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to join the exciting world of culinary arts or hospitality.

Says Laurica, “We focus primarily on providing quality education for occupations that are in demand in the economy, thereby ensuring that every graduate has an excellent chance of being employed. It is our mission to educate, empower and employ, therefore, we offer nationally accredited and internationally recognised qualifications and programmes. We focus on high-quality, relevant education and training that prepares our students for their future. On completion of their programme, our students are job ready and employable, and our in-house placement agency (Beyond Grad) ensures that no student is left behind in their quest to become gainfully employed. We cannot wait to see Shaylene bloom as a chef and are proud to be a part of her culinary journey.”

As the programme will be delivered via online learning, Shaylene will require a computer with internet access. If any sponsors are willing to assist, please get in touch with East Coast Radio.
