Save our Community Radio Stations

Save our Community Radio Stations
Pat Phore - MD Dilepa Marketing Communications

In a bid to save community radio stations affected by the recent looting, Dilepa Marketing and Communications have contributed R50 000 as well as set up a trust fund called “Save Our Community Radio” to rebuild the radio stations.

With the current riots that broke out first in Kwa-Zulu Natal, followed by the Gauteng province, we have seen community radio stations being victims of the riots by getting their hard-earned equipment looted. Four community stations; Alex FM, Mams Radio, and Westside FM in Gauteng, and Intokozo FM in Kwa-Zulu Natal became victims of this vicious act.

Community radio stations offer a model of radio broadcasting beyond commercial and public service. Their broadcasting serves interests within the surrounding community. Produced content is largely popular and relevant to the local audience. Content that may be overlooked by commercial or mass-media broadcasters. Community radio stations are also a vehicle for partnership with the community and voluntary sector, including civil society, agencies, NGOs, and citizens to promote community development.

Additionally, Dilepa Marketing and Communications will be lending their Outside Broadcasting van for the affected community radio stations to use to broadcast while raising funds to help them get back in action and not lose out on the revenue that they make through advertising.

“Nelson Mandela once said: “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead”. The most important thing for us is to make sure that people don’t lose their jobs and the stations don’t lose revenue. This will be impossible without the right facilities. It took blood and sweat for most of these community radio stations to be where they are and we have a long-standing relationship with some of these stations. We saw it fitting to step up and use our influence to try and assist where we can,” says Dilepa Marketing and Communication MD Pat Phore.

Dilepa Marketing and Communications is a media buying agency with a focus on community media and represents over 190 community radio stations around the country.
