PVC compounds are small plastic pellets which are melted down and used to create a wide range of end products. There are two main types of PVC compounds, namely flexible PVC compounds, and rigid PVC compounds. The type of end product you wish to create will determine which compound is right for your project

The Main Differences between Rigid PVC Compounds and Flexible PVC Compounds

When looking at the differences between these two compounds, the one that really stands out is the fact that flexible PVC compounds have plasticiser in them, and rigid PVC compounds usually do not, or have very little. It is this plasticiser that gives flexible PVC compound its suppleness and flexibility.

What Are Flexible PVC Compounds Typically Used For?

The end products created using flexible PVC compounds, are usually quite soft and flexible, including items such as:

  • Gaskets
  • Gumboots
  • Blood bags
What Are Rigid PVC Compounds Typically Used For?

Rigid PVC compounds are typically used to create end products that are hard and have exterior, protective uses. Some common end products include:

  • Pipe and Pipe Fittings
  •  Gutters
  •  Trunking
Rigid vs Flexible PVC Compounds: Choosing the Right PVC Compound for Your Project.

By now you should have an idea whether a rigid PVC compound or a flexible PVC compound would best suit your needs, based on the end product that you wish to create.

Keep in mind that other chemicals can be added to the compound of your choice to give it certain properties such as UV-resistance, chemical resistance and more.

If none of the above seem perfectly suitable for your application, you have a third option which is semi-rigid PVC compounds, which is somewhat of a combination of rigid PVC compounds and flexible PVC compounds.
