In his recently delivered Budget Speech, Minister of Finance, Tito Mboweni called for data costs to fall. This has been welcomed by Intuit QuickBooks, the world’s leading online accounting software.

Brandon Wilson, the company’s Director of Marketing – Global Expansion, says: “After spending time in South Africa in early February, we have come to learn that the potential of the country’s small businesses is hampered by exorbitant data fees – a crisis when one considers, as President Cyril Ramaphosa put it in his 2019 State of the Nation Address, ‘the key role that small businesses play in stimulating economic activity and employment’.

He explains: “QuickBooks has the technology that can help small businesses prosper and, at the same time, connect them with accounting professionals – a must for business survival and success, according to 89% of small businesses. These days, all business owners need to tap into this technology is a cheap smart phone and internet connection. With Minister Mboweni working with the Minister of Science and Technology, Mmamoloko Ngubane to address this matter, more small businesses will be able to access the tools they need to flourish.”

Wilson also applauds the announcement that the Governor of the South African Reserve Bank is driving an ambitious FinTech programme, together with colleagues from the other financial-sector regulators. “This is something that is very close to our hearts. Additionally, we stand firmly behind the Minister’s statement that budget spending has to focus on getting the country ready for technology and believe that this will enable the country’s future entrepreneurs to not only survive, but thrive, particularly on the global playing field.”

He concludes: “Technology powers prosperity, with government creating an enabling environment for all South Africans to access it, the country’s future looks very bright indeed.”
