More than 25 drivers joined Maxim representatives and government officials for discussions on road safety, regulatory compliance and the challenges facing e-hailing drivers.

Maxim is a licensed e-hailing company that connects passengers with drivers through its digital platform, providing access to on demand transport services in cities across South Africa. The company hosted a Driver Awareness Engagement in Mbombela on 27 October, bringing together more than 25 drivers, Maxim representatives and city officials from government departments, including the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport.

The engagement provided a platform for drivers to raise concerns, ask questions and engage directly with Maxim representatives and government stakeholders. The strong turnout and active participation reflected the importance of creating opportunities for drivers to share their experiences and seek clarity on issues affecting their daily operations.

The session covered driver safety, features available through the Maxim application and practical aspects of using the platform. Drivers had the opportunity to ask questions, gain clarity on available features and engage directly with Maxim representatives.

Luyanda Maseko, Maxim representative based in Mbombela, and Mndeni Gift Buthelezi engaged with drivers throughout the discussions, responding to their questions and providing explanations on the issues raised. The open exchange allowed drivers to discuss practical challenges affecting their work and seek clarification directly from representatives who work closely with the local driver community.

Reflecting on the engagement, Maseko and Buthelezi said:

“Engaging directly with our drivers and hearing their experiences firsthand is important to understanding the challenges they face every day. We believe that creating spaces where drivers feel heard and can engage directly with us helps build trust, strengthen communication and improve morale. These conversations are an important step towards understanding the needs of our driver community and identifying areas where we can improve.”

The participation of officials from the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport added a valuable regulatory perspective to the engagement. The officials shared information on relevant transport and licensing regulations, helping drivers better understand the requirements associated with operating within the e-hailing industry. Their involvement also provided an opportunity for drivers to engage with government representatives on matters affecting their work and the wider transport environment.

Driver safety was another key theme. Participants raised questions about measures to support drivers and passengers, particularly in relation to nighttime travel and emergency situations. The discussion included Maxim’s driver SOS feature, which provides drivers with additional options to seek assistance during emergencies. The discussion highlighted the importance of driver awareness, responsible practices and understanding the available resources when dealing with emergencies.

The engagement provided an opportunity for drivers to share their concerns and engage directly with Maxim representatives and government stakeholders. Such initiatives support the continued development of the e-hailing industry by helping identify opportunities to improve service delivery, strengthen safety awareness and address challenges affecting drivers and passengers.
