Citizen Leader Lab, a leadership development and social change organisation, announces the appointment of Lerato Phelane, a seasoned Internal Audit Specialist, to the board. Lerato brings a distinguished track record in governance, strategy, risk assessment & management, process optimisation, and fundraising to her board role.

With a Chartered Accountant qualification and prestigious executive education from Wits Business School and Duke Corporate Education, Lerato Phelane was recognised as a Top 35 under 35 Chartered Accountant for 2023 by SAICA. Her commitment to excellence and innovation aligns seamlessly with the ethos of Citizen Leader Lab, an organisation dedicated to driving sustainable and impactful change.

Lerato’s international experience, including a secondment to EY Atlanta and work with Massmart (a Walmart Subsidiary), underscores her ability to navigate global operations and dynamics. Her volunteer work for the UN Women CSW67 further demonstrates her dedication to addressing global challenges and making a positive impact on a global scale.

As a social justice activist Lerato serves as the Chairperson of the Young Leaders Connect-IDEAL and is the Chairperson of the Transformation Committee at Netcare where she drives the work of empowering the future though the development of the next generation of ethical women leaders as well fostering an environment of diversity, equity, and inclusion. As a Governance Specialist she is a member of the audit committee of Netcare Medical Aid Scheme as well as an International Board Member for The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation with a focus on Africa Industry Leadership. She was a member of the audit and risk committee for the IWFSA between 2022 & 2023 and is a participant on the current Citizen Leader Lab Leaders for Education programme (formerly known as Partners for Possibility). Through the Leaders for Education programme, public school principals are paired with private sector business leaders in a 12-month leadership development programme.

Lerato Phelane’s appointment further strengthens Citizen Leader Lab’s own commitment to excellence and innovation in leadership.
