Praia, Cape Verde – As Cape Verde approaches crucial legislative elections, water scarcity has emerged as the foremost challenge for voters. The Atlantic archipelago is ranked among the 15 countries with the lowest rainfall worldwide, making the vital resource both scarce and increasingly expensive.

On Santiago Island, farmers report longstanding water conflicts. One farmer noted a debt exceeding 50,000 to the national water company. Many have switched to drip irrigation, using 75% less water than older methods. In poorer neighborhoods of the capital, mains water does not reach homes, forcing residents to buy from private trucks. One resident explained that breakdowns or inaccessible roads require fetching water on foot.

Thirty percent of Cape Verde’s population lacks running water connections. The diaspora, particularly from France, has engaged through associations and water agencies to support relief efforts.
