Authorities in Tanzania’s Shinyanga region are continuing search-and-rescue operations after a collapse at the Wachapakazi Gold Mine left 22 people missing. Three technicians have been rescued so far, 32 hours after the incident occurred during maintenance work on Monday.

The mine, owned and operated by a youth-led mining group, had previously been suspended for safety violations. According to local officials, 25 workers were initially reported missing across three mining shafts—six in one, 11 in another, and eight in a third. Rescue teams established contact with one shaft, leading to the recovery of three survivors, but communication has yet to be restored with the other two.

Tanzanian Defense and Security Forces remain on-site, working to locate the remaining missing individuals. The regional mining commission had suspended operations at the site following safety inspections, but the collapse occurred as technicians were conducting repairs to reinforce the shafts for potential reopening.

Ongoing Safety Concerns

This incident follows another mine collapse in May in the same region, which killed six people and left 11 others trapped before their rescue. The Tanzanian Mining Commission, established in 2018, has reported a decline in mining accidents due to increased inspections. However, challenges remain in regulating the country’s estimated 1 million small-scale miners, many of whom operate in informal groups like the Wachapakazi mine owners.

Last year, the commission inspected 8 major mines, 56 mid-scale mines, and 21,000 small-scale operations, highlighting the difficulties in enforcing safety standards across such a vast and often unregulated sector.

What Comes Next?

An investigation into the collapse is expected, as is standard procedure following such incidents. Authorities will determine whether the mine can resume operations or face further penalties. Meanwhile, rescue teams remain at the scene, hoping for breakthroughs in locating the missing workers.

As Tanzania grapples with balancing its thriving mining industry—a key economic driver—and worker safety, this latest disaster underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement and oversight in small-scale mining operations.
