MALUTI MOUNTAINS, Lesotho — Thousands of winter sports enthusiasts are flocking to the Lesotho snow mountains this winter season, solidifying the landlocked country’s reputation as a premier skiing destination for travelers across southern Africa. While snow sports are rarely associated with the African continent, this mountainous kingdom has become the go-to location for those seeking alpine thrills close to home.
“When you think of the African continent, you don’t think about snow. You think about the sun and the Sahara,” noted one visiting ski enthusiast. “But you can experience all of that and also come here where it snows at the same time. It’s just mind-blowing.”
Returning visitors frequently highlight the unique advantages of the local slopes compared to traditional international hubs. “I’ve been to Europe, and I can tell you that it’s totally different. The vibe here is way better,” shared a seasoned visitor. “It’s such a privilege having it here, because you can have a whole ski trip here instead of buying a flight ticket to Europe.”
Lesotho’s high elevation and mountainous terrain combine to make it the coldest country in Africa. During the winter season between June and August, temperatures in the highlands typically plunge to minus 8° C. This reliable chill has built a loyal, returning following.
“Probably 2013 or 2014 was our first time, but we skipped years now and then. I think this is our eighth time coming here,” mentioned a returning group of visitors.
For many, the slopes offer a welcoming environment for beginners. Visitors frequently recall braving falls and dusting themselves off before attempting another run, eventually achieving their first full glide down without falling. “At the start, it was a little bit discouraging because you fall, and you fall hard,” explained a first-time skier. “But once the people here gave me one lesson, after that hour I honestly felt confident. From there on, it’s just slow and steady, rinse and repeat until you get it. It’s been a good experience. This is an amazing slope to learn on.”
At the heart of this winter tourism boom is the Afriski Mountain Resort. Nestled in the northern Maluti Mountains some 3,200 meters above sea level, it stands as Lesotho’s single fully operational ski resort and the only one in sub-Saharan Africa. The majestic, snow-covered landscape provides an ideal setting for both seasoned athletes and new visitors to enjoy the slopes.
The ski area is expansive enough to accommodate the growing crowds, with slopes spread over 17 hectares surrounding the resort—an area roughly the size of 24 standard soccer pitches.
