Ivory Coast marked its 65th independence anniversary with a grand military parade in the central city of Bouaké, just a week after President Alassane Ouattara announced his controversial bid for a fourth term in October’s election.
The event, attended by government officials and supporters, showcased the country’s military strength and reinforced its alliances with Western nations—a stark contrast to the growing anti-French sentiment across West Africa. French, American, and Moroccan troops participated in the parade, signaling Ivory Coast’s continued military cooperation with traditional partners.
“A country’s strength is measured by its socio-economic development but also by the strength of its army,” a government representative stated. “This parade demonstrates Ivory Coast’s military power and its strategic position on the global stage.”
The participation of foreign troops underscored Ivory Coast’s diplomatic ties at a time when neighboring Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have expelled French forces and shifted toward Russia. Since gaining independence from France in 1960, Ivory Coast has remained one of France’s closest allies in Francophone West Africa.
President Ouattara’s decision to seek re-election has drawn criticism, with opponents arguing that a fourth term violates constitutional limits. However, his administration maintains that the move is legal, setting the stage for a contentious election season.
