Ethnic Conflict in Ethiopia by Mohammad Alshereda

Ethiopia is a very diverse country when it comes to its population. There are 80 ethnic groups in Ethiopia. 4 of these ethnic groups make about 75% of the population. These groups are: Oromo, Somali, Amhara and Tigray.

This diversity is causing a lot of conflicts in the country. Historically, Ethiopia has seen the worst of tragedies and rebellions that resulted in more poverty and bloodshed in 1974 and 1991.

In 2018, Abiy Ahmed was chosen to be Prime Minister of Ethiopia. He made huge steps towards peace and freedom of speech. He made a peace deal with Eritrea that ended a 20 years old conflict over borders. He was given the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019.

Shortly Afterwards, ethnic conflict came to the surface again which resulted in acts of violence. The Internet was shut down more than 8 times in Ethiopia in 2019 alone.

My message to all Ethiopians is:

“Your country has just started to breathe the air of peace. It is a great opportunity for Ethiopia to rise up and prosper. Save your country from the tragedies of civil war and stand together as one nation for your sake and your children’s sake”.
