Ugandan police used tear gas against protesters in the capital Friday following the announcement of early presidential election results. The Ugandan Electoral Commission’s provisional data shows incumbent President Yoweri Museveni leading with nearly 75% of the vote.
Concurrently, the National Unity Platform (NUP) party stated that its presidential candidate, Bobi Wine, was forcibly taken to an unknown location by armed forces. This claim has not been independently verified. A senior NUP official said the party is awaiting confirmation.
Bobi Wine has alleged massive voter fraud in the election.
Separately, violence was reported Friday in the countryside near Kampala. Accounts vary, but according to police and a local Member of Parliament, several people were killed.
