The official campaign period for the Central African Republic’s December 28 presidential election began this week. Campaigning will last for two weeks in a context described as tense by the United Nations.

Incumbent President Faustin Archange Touadéra, seeking a second term, launched his campaign in the Ciboot region before holding a rally in the capital, Bangui. A spokesperson for his campaign said the team is counting on strong voter turnout and cited the president’s promises of peace and stability.

Opposition candidate Mahamat Kamoun unveiled a platform focused on 25 social pillars, including building a strong state and economic recovery. He also announced the support of former minister Fidèle Gouandjika.

During his campaign launch, Kamoun criticized the ruling camp, accusing it of challenging the nationality of some citizens and saying, “The architecture of Central African democracy has collapsed.”

All major candidates have called for a peaceful campaign. Voters will also cast ballots for legislative and regional municipal offices on December 28.
