YAOUNDE, Cameroon, December 9, 2019,-/African Media Agency (AMA)/- On December 3, 2019, Ambassador Barlerin and Governor Awa Fonka Augustine presided over the swearing-in ceremony for 41 new Peace Corps Volunteers at the Salle des Fetes Olympia in Foumbot. Peace Corps’ uninterrupted cooperation with Cameroon since 1962 has not only contributed to the development in rural areas in Cameroon, but also created multi-generational American-Cameroonian friendships. In his remarks, the Ambassador thanked the Governor and the community of Foumbot for the hospitality they have shown to Peace Corps Volunteers.
The ceremony marks the end of the volunteers’ ten weeks training and the beginning of their two-year commitment. The new volunteers will be posted in the Adamawa, Center, East, Littoral, South, and West regions. Cameroon now hosts 130 Peace Corps Volunteers who work with local community groups in six of the country’s ten regions. Peace Corps Volunteers work in the fields of education, agriculture, and community health.
The Peace Corps was launched by President John F. Kennedy in 1961. Peace Corps Volunteers currently serve in 76 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central and South America, Europe, and the Middle East. More than 4,000 Americans have served as Peace Corps Volunteers in Cameroon since 1962.
