EASTERN CAPE — A convicted rapist, Zola Dennis Saul, has been sentenced to 15 years of direct imprisonment by the Makhanda Magistrate’s Court, marking a significant victory for justice in the Sarah Baartman district. The sentencing, handed down on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, also included a declaration that the perpetrator is unfit to possess a firearm.
Saul had previously resided with the 26-year-old victim’s mother beginning in 2016, eventually marrying her in 2022. He was later evicted from their shared residence after the mother discovered his attempts to initiate an inappropriate relationship with her daughter.
The sexual assault occurred on the morning of 23 July 2025. Saul returned to the residence under the pretext of charging his cellular device. Finding the 26-year-old victim home alone, he lured her into a bedroom, overpowered her, and sexually assaulted her without her consent.
The victim immediately reported the assault to her mother. Following this disclosure, community members confronted Saul, who verbally admitted to the offense. Before law enforcement could be alerted, the community physically assaulted the accused. Responding police officers safely extracted Saul from the volatile situation and placed him under formal arrest.
The case was meticulously investigated by Detective Sergeant Sandra Catherine of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. After several remands during the bail application hearings, bail was successfully opposed in the Makhanda Magistrate’s Court on 28 August 2025, ensuring Saul remained in custody until his conviction and sentencing.
Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, commended the thorough and meticulous work of the FCS Unit investigator for building a watertight case that ensured the perpetrator’s removal from the community.
Concluding the statement on the case, Major General Kupiso issued a stern reminder to the public, urging communities to reject vigilantism and continue trusting the legal system to deliver justice.
