NORTHERN CAPE — A Modderrivier detective has successfully secured a 10-year prison sentence for a 36-year-old man, infamously dubbed the ‘Weekend Special’ abuser, following his conviction at the Kimberley Regional Court. The Frances Baard District Management officially welcomed the ruling, which holds the offender accountable for repeatedly subjecting his domestic partner to severe physical abuse.
On Tuesday, 21 July 2026, the court convicted the accused of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The 27-year-old victim, who was in a domestic relationship and resided with the accused, endured a pattern of repeated physical abuse that predominantly occurred over weekends. The final incident took place in the early hours of Thursday, 1 January 2026, while the victim was socializing at a business establishment in Rietvale, Ritchie. The accused arrived at the premises, forcibly removed her, and initiated an assault before dragging her back to their shared residence, where the physical abuse continued.
Managing to escape the ordeal, the victim sought refuge at her parents’ home. She subsequently reported the incident to law enforcement and formally opened a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Authorities swiftly traced and arrested the accused. During his initial court appearance, his application for bail was denied, ensuring he remained in custody until the final conclusion of the case on 21 July 2026.
The successful prosecution was directly attributed to the diligent investigation conducted by Detective Constable Dieter Esterhuizen of the Modderrivier Detective Service. His meticulous investigative work ensured the violent offender was brought to justice and held fully accountable for his actions.
Frances Baard District Commissioner, Major General Charlotte Makgari, publicly commended Detective Constable Esterhuizen for his unwavering dedication and commitment to the investigation, highlighting the critical role of thorough police work in protecting victims of domestic violence and securing decisive legal outcomes.
