EASTERN CAPE — A targeted police operation has resulted in a significant Eastern Cape stock theft arrest, with authorities successfully recovering approximately R25,000 worth of livestock. The successful bust highlights ongoing law enforcement efforts to combat rural crime and protect agricultural communities in the region.
Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Mthatha Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit apprehended the 72-year-old male suspect on Tuesday, 21 July 2026. The arrest took place in the Tyelebana locality, specifically within the Xhongorha A/A area under the Bityi policing precinct, during a strategic follow-up operation aimed at curbing livestock rustling.
According to SAPS spokespersons, the suspect was found in possession of 16 sheep and two lambs. Investigators noted that the identification marks on the sheep had been deliberately tampered with in an attempt to obscure their true ownership. When questioned by officers, the elderly man failed to provide a satisfactory account of how he came into possession of the animals.
The recovered livestock has been secured as evidence while the investigation continues.
Following his arrest, the suspect was held in police custody. He is scheduled to appear before the Bityi Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, where he will face formal charges for the possession of suspected stolen livestock.
Authorities continue to urge community members to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities regarding livestock in their areas to help dismantle rural crime syndicates.
