WESTERN CAPE — A massive Bothasig drug and firearms bust has successfully removed R10 million worth of narcotics and seven unlicensed guns from the streets after Western Cape law enforcement raided a suspected gang stash house in Richwood.
Acting on intelligence regarding a local gang utilizing a residential apartment as a storage facility, Western Cape Crime Intelligence spokespersons detailed a tactical intervention that took place on Sunday, 19 July 2026. At approximately 21:19, operatives zeroed in on a 29-year-old male suspect at a property located on Sylvia Street in De Zicht, Richwood.
Surveillance teams observed the suspect driving a white Mercedes-Benz. As the vehicle attempted to exit the residential complex, law enforcement officers boxed it in and ordered the driver out. Western Cape Crime Intelligence spokespersons reported that the suspect had a black shopping bag resting on his lap, which he conspicuously held above his head as he stepped out of the car.
A subsequent search of the individual yielded an unlicensed 9mm Tauris handgun. When questioned, the 29-year-old failed to provide a lawful or satisfactory explanation for the weapon. Officers also discovered that he was in possession of a key to the targeted Sylvia Street apartment.
According to SAPS spokespersons, the suspect’s demeanor shifted during the transit to the apartment, as he casually informed the escorting officers that they would need to bring “a lot of forensic bags” for the impending search.
The suspect’s prediction proved accurate. Upon executing a search warrant at the premises, investigators uncovered a sprawling illicit inventory:
Dining Room:Several bricks of cocaine, wrapped in plastic, were found lying on the floor alongside black bags containing additional plastic wrappers.
Cupboards: Various narcotics were discovered packed inside suitcases.
Bathroom: A box situated on top of the washing machine concealed two additional 9mm pistols and a supply of ecstasy tablets.
Bedroom: Investigators recovered four more firearms and 16 magazines loaded with ammunition.
Kitchen: Further caches of drugs were located inside the kitchen cupboards.
In total, the comprehensive sweep of the apartment resulted in the confiscation of seven 9mm pistols, 17 different types of magazines, and 1,030 assorted rounds of ammunition. The combined street value of the seized firearms and the massive assortment of hard drugs is estimated at R10 million.
The 29-year-old suspect was formally arrested and detained at the local police station. SAPS Anti-Gang Unit spokespersons confirmed that the docket has been transferred to their detectives for an expanded investigation into the gang’s operations. The accused is currently being held and is slated to make his first appearance in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court once the formal charges are finalized.
