
KWAZULU-NATAL — Emergency responders pulled an unidentified body from the Mkomazi River in Umkomaas on Friday afternoon, concluding a swift search and rescue mission triggered by a public tip-off.
The incident unfolded on 17 July 2026, when specialized units from Port Shepstone Search and Rescue and K9 Search and Rescue were mobilized to the local waterway. The rapid deployment occurred immediately after authorities received a call reporting that human remains had been spotted in the river.
Upon reaching the riverbank, emergency personnel launched a targeted recovery operation. Search and Rescue spokespersons confirmed that the operation was successfully executed, resulting in the retrieval of the deceased from the water.
Currently, the individual’s identity remains unknown. Law enforcement has opened an active investigation to piece together the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and to formally establish who the deceased is.
