PIETERMARITZBURG — New details have emerged in the murder of Democratic Alliance (DA) Umngeni councillor Nhlalayenza Ndlovu, as two of the accused formally pleaded guilty in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court. Khayelihle Shabalala and Deon Mathonsi admitted their involvement in the December 2023 assassination, marking a significant development in a case that has drawn intense public scrutiny, while proceedings against two other suspects will be heard separately.
During the recent hearings, the court heard a detailed account of how the fatal attack was allegedly planned and executed outside Ndlovu’s home in Umngeni. While both Shabalala and Mathonsi entered guilty pleas to the murder charges, their admissions came with a critical distinction: both men acknowledged their active participation in the crime, but neither admitted to firing the fatal shots.
This partial admission has prompted a firm response from the victim’s relatives. A spokesperson for the Ndlovu family emphasized that they want every individual responsible for the murder to be held fully accountable. The family also issued a stern caution against the potential implication of innocent individuals merely to expedite the closing of the case. They stressed that justice must be served accurately, without pinning the crime on those who played no role in the tragedy simply to satisfy investigative pressures.
Meanwhile, the legal proceedings against the two remaining co-accused will continue on a separate track. These individuals are expected to be served with a trial in the High Court, where the broader allegations surrounding the orchestration of the assassination will be thoroughly examined.
The guilty pleas mark a pivotal, albeit incomplete, milestone in the judicial process. As the case moves forward, the Ndlovu family remains steadfast in their call for comprehensive and transparent justice, ensuring that the full truth behind the councillor’s death is brought to light.
