MIDRAND, JOHANNESBURG — The South Africa-Namibia Business Forum is poised to redefine cross-border economic collaboration, bringing together top government officials and private sector leaders to dismantle trade barriers and accelerate regional industrialisation. Hosted by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) at the Gallagher Convention Centre this Friday, the summit serves as a critical pillar of the broader Bi-National Commission programme between the two nations.
The high-level gathering is designed to foster actionable dialogue aimed at strengthening bilateral trade and unlocking new investment avenues. According to Willem Van der Spuy, Acting Deputy Director-General for Exports at the dtic, a primary objective of the forum is to pinpoint and resolve existing bottlenecks in cross-border commerce. By aligning strategic frameworks, both nations aim to optimize transport and logistics networks, ensuring the frictionless transit of processed goods across their shared border.
Van der Spuy emphasized that the bilateral relationship must progress beyond traditional trade models. “The bilateral relations between South Africa and Namibia should evolve to focus more on the implementation of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) Industrialisation Strategy and the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) in a way that promotes the development of regional value-chains and growth of the respective economies and creates employment by tapping into manufacturing and export potential in among others, agriculture and agro-processing, clothing, textile and footwear industries,” he stated.
Furthermore, the summit will explore actionable methods for both countries to capitalize on their complementary economic strengths. Discussions will center on cultivating resilient regional ecosystems, driving local value addition, and fast-tracking industrialisation within pivotal sectors, with a strong emphasis on advanced manufacturing.
Operating under the guiding theme, “Driving Regional Industrialisation, Investment and Sustainable Growth Through Strategic South Africa–Namibia Partnerships,” the forum promises to lay a renewed, future-focused foundation for long-term and mutually beneficial economic integration across the region.
