SOWETO, Gauteng — The African People’s Convention (APC) has officially named Mo-Afrika Mandla Mokoena as its Johannesburg mayoral candidate, marking a key milestone in the party’s campaign strategy for the upcoming local government elections.
The announcement was made earlier today by APC leader Themba Godi during a public gathering at the Doornkop Bus rank in Soweto.
Speaking to supporters, Godi expressed strong confidence in the newly unveiled candidate. He stated that he believes Mokoena possesses the necessary technical ability, leadership skills, and political acumen required to effectively manage and run the City of Johannesburg.
Mokoena is a prominent figure within the party, currently serving as the APC’s Treasurer-General. In addition to his national party duties, he is the sitting APC councillor in the Johannesburg metro, giving him direct experience in the city’s local governance.
The decision to field Mokoena was reached following extensive internal consultations. According to the party leadership, the APC’s National Elections Committee engaged with the party’s office bearers to finalize their choice for the metro.
“We met, we discussed, and we agreed that for the city of Johannesburg, our mayoral candidate will be Mo-Afrika Mandla Mokoena,” the party leadership confirmed, summarizing the committee’s consensus.
The APC is among a growing number of political parties unveiling their respective mayoral candidates as the country gears up for the critical local government elections scheduled for November.
