WITBANK, MPUMALANGA — Authorities in Witbank, Mpumalanga, have officially opened two inquest dockets following the tragic deaths of a 43-year-old landlord and his four-year-old nephew, who allegedly perished after consuming biscuits from a neighborhood spaza shop. The fatal incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has prompted a comprehensive police investigation into the source of the tainted snacks.
According to a statement released by the police on Thursday, the deadly sequence of events is directly linked to recent unrest targeting foreign nationals in the region. The owner of the affected tuck shop, who is a foreign national, had taken precautionary measures to safeguard his inventory amid reports of looting directed at immigrant-owned spaza shops in the area. To protect his goods, he reportedly struck an agreement with his landlord to temporarily store his stock inside the main house.
It was from this relocated stock that the 43-year-old landlord allegedly consumed some of the biscuits. He subsequently shared the snacks with his four-year-old nephew. Shortly after ingesting the food, both the man and the young boy began experiencing severe adverse reactions, which included sudden dizziness and uncontrollable vomiting.
Emergency efforts were made to save them, and the victims were rushed to a nearby local medical facility for urgent treatment. Tragically, healthcare professionals pronounced both the 43-year-old man and his four-year-old nephew dead on arrival.
The police have confirmed that the exact cause of death, as well as the precise origin and contamination source of the biscuits, will be established through post-mortem examinations currently underway.
