JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Recent protests in South Africa targeting undocumented foreigners have escalated dramatically, with militant groups conducting door-to-door operations in Johannesburg to pull migrants from their residences and hand them over to police.
In the Johannesburg township of Alexandra, witnesses observed protesters breaking down doors and entering houses where they suspected undocumented foreigners were hiding. While the demonstrations are driven by a strict anti-illegal immigration mandate, some participants acknowledge that the unrest is spiraling out of control.
“Our mandate is clear. We need them to go. We don’t need them here in South Africa because they are here illegally,” stated a protest spokesperson, who also conceded that the current situation on the ground is now “out of hands.”
The aggressive actions are fueled by deep-seated socioeconomic frustrations. Another spokesperson for the movement explained that local citizens feel overwhelmed by what they describe as neglected borders and a massive influx of undocumented migrants.
“The pie is now too small to share because South Africans are now unemployed,” the representative stated, pointing to soaring crime rates as a major catalyst for the unrest. The spokesperson demanded that the government take immediate and serious action to deport undocumented foreigners.
These door-to-door expulsions follow months of frequently violent anti-immigrant demonstrations across the region. The escalation was largely triggered by an unofficial June 30 ultimatum issued by protesters, demanding that all illegal migrants leave the country by that date.
The intense pressure and vigilantism have had immediate consequences, with thousands of foreigners fleeing South Africa in recent weeks to escape the hostile environment and avoid forced removals.
