PRETORIA, South Africa — In a decisive move to strengthen national border security, the South African Department of Home Affairs is launching a major recruitment drive to onboard 301 new immigration officers. This strategic expansion is designed to significantly bolster the country’s immigration enforcement capabilities, addressing critical resource shortages while modernizing the frontline workforce responsible for upholding national entry laws.

Operating with a limited workforce of just 868 officers, the department has faced immense pressure to maintain comprehensive immigration enforcement across the entire country. However, through careful internal budget reprioritization despite severe ongoing resource constraints, the department has successfully secured the funding necessary to bring this new cohort on board.

By increasing the total headcount from 868 to 1,169, the department will achieve a massive 35% enhancement in its frontline enforcement capacity, according to a statement released by the department on Monday.

This recruitment initiative is not happening in isolation. It is being executed in close collaboration with the National Treasury to secure further resources. The joint effort aims to accelerate vital digital transformation projects and broader capacity-building programs within the department.

Minister of Home Affairs, Dr. Leon Schreiber, emphasized that this aggressive recruitment drive is a foundational pillar of the department’s sweeping “Home Affairs @ home” reforms. The overarching goal of these reforms is to engineer a secure, highly digitized, and fully functional immigration ecosystem that strictly serves the national interest.

“The Home Affairs @ home reforms are about building an immigration system that works from beginning to end,” Dr. Schreiber explained. He noted that achieving this requires a dual approach: leveraging modern technology, such as the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), to tighten the enforcement of lawful entry into South Africa, while simultaneously investing heavily in the frontline personnel who execute these laws on the ground every day.

Describing the hiring of the 301 additional officers as one of the most significant investments in border enforcement capacity in recent years, the Minister stated that the move will drastically improve the department’s ability to maintain the rule of law and safeguard the integrity of South Africa’s immigration system.
