NORTH WEST — A significant Potchefstroom drug bust took place on Friday, 3 July 2026, when authorities apprehended a 35-year-old Nigerian migrant on suspicion of narcotics trafficking. The successful operation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) highlights ongoing efforts to curb the illicit substance trade in the region.
The investigation was triggered by actionable intelligence pointing to a stash of suspected drugs concealed in an alleyway situated directly behind a local bakery. Law enforcement immediately mobilized to operationalize the tip-off and secure the area.
Building on this initial breakthrough, detectives pursued additional leads that ultimately directed them to a nearby flat where the suspect had reportedly been seen. Officers located the individual at the premises and conducted a search, which yielded a cache of illegal drugs along with an undisclosed sum of cash in his possession. This discovery prompted his immediate arrest for allegedly dealing in drugs.
The accused remains in police custody and is slated to make his first appearance at the Potchefstroom Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 6 July 2026, where he will formally answer to a charge of dealing in drugs.
